Monk Uffing

It is thanks to Monk Uffing that the city of Workum can be historically dated.

As a young man, he was fascinated by the monks of the St. Odulphus Monastery in Hemelum. In the 10th century, he joined the monastery and learned to read and write. Later, he registered under the name Uffing of Workum at the monastery in Werden (near Essen), founded by the Frisian apostle Liudger. This confirms that Workum has existed since at least the 10th century.

Commissioned by the city of Workum in 1997,
created by Sofie Hupkens.
