Sunday, November 24, the Mill Day Súdwest-Fryslân will take place. Most mills in the Súdwest-Fryslân municipality will be running on this last Sunday of November and, with sufficient wind, fully operational.
In recent years, there has always been enough wind, water, and grain on this Mill Day to grind flour and wood to saw into planks. On this unique Mill Day in the Súdwest-Fryslân municipality, you can experience it all and see how things were done in the past.
There are more than 30 windmills in our municipality. Over 25 mills will participate in this event. Most are polder mills, but there are also a few sawmills, corn mills, American wind engines, and even a Tjasker within our municipal boundaries.
For polder drainage, there are various types of mills, including octagonal ground sailers, Spider mills, Boerenmuontsen, large and small wind engines, and Tjaskers. The last Sunday in November was deliberately chosen, as this time of year allows the mills to showcase their original purposes: grinding, sawing, and pumping. This is often not possible on the national or Frisian Mill Days due to insufficient wind or water.
The mills will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and admission is free. Visit our website www.molenstichtingswf.nl for the latest list of participating mills in the most mill-rich municipality in the Netherlands.
